The Committee of Petitioners would like to thank the residents of Vernon who stepped up to sign the petition to oppose and repeal Township of Vernon Ordinance #14-01. This ordinance, passed by the Vernon Township Council on Jan. 27, 2014, in a 3-2 vote, raised the mayor’s salary from $30,000 to $70,000. Our form of government allows for a petition process to place ordinances on the ballot for a public vote, if a sufficient number of registered voters sign the petition. On Feb. 14, 2014, we submitted the petition to the office of the Vernon’s clerk and the deputy clerk certified the petition, having a sufficient amount of signatures. The voters of Vernon will have the opportunity to vote on the mayor’s raise in the general election this November.
