Pablo Cruise sails into Newton
NEWTON — Pablo Cruise will perform at the Newton Theatre on Saturday, June 7 at 8 p.m.
In 1975 Pablo Cruise released its first album simply entitled "Pablo Cruise." The album cover featured a huge gorilla. The band, David Jenkins (guitars and vocals), Cory Lerios (keyboards and vocals), Steve Price (drums) and Bud Cockrell (bass and vocals) was not pictured, which created a bit of a mystique.
In essence that’s what Pablo Cruise’s music is all about. Honest, real, down to earth vocals, accompanied by fun and infectious grooves.
In the 70s and 80s the band toured the United States, Canada and Japan extensively, welcoming fans to “Climb Aboard The Good Ship Pablo Cruise.” Reaching the top 10 with mega hits like "Watcha Gonna Do When She Says Goodbye" and "Love Will Find A Way," and other hits, the band sold several million albums and singles and established themselves as well respected writers and performers.
They appeared on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and numerous other TV shows. In 1979 they broke Elvis Presley’s attendance record at The Sahara Tahoe in Nevada, becoming the first rock band to play a Casino Showroom. They were also the first rock band to grace the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, but by 1986 the band had lost its focus. Cory Lerios and David Jenkins the bands’ principal songwriters, and Steve Price decided to take a hiatus. A hiatus that lasted more than 20 years.
Original vocalist David Jenkins continued touring and garnered acclaim with the successful country-rock band Southern Pacific, racking up hits and touring the USA. In ’99 Jenkins joined forces with the composite group, Rock & Pop Masters, including some of the great singers of the ’70s and ’80s. In May 2011, Jenkins traveled to Iraq to perform for the troops with Bobby Kimball (Toto), and Bill Champlin (Chicago).
Pianist and vocalist Cory Lerios turned his writing and producing abilities to film and television. He has scored many network series, such as ABC’s critically acclaimed “Max Headroom”, “O’Hara” and “Police Story”. Writing to “picture” became Cory’s newfound passion and in 1989, Cory and partner John D’Andrea landed the theme and underscore for NBC’s “Baywatch,” scoring 11 seasons and garnering several Emmy Nominations. Cory won the coveted award in 1998 for his participation in the music direction of “Days Of Our Lives.”
Drummer Steve Price became a leading figure in providing E-Learning for many companies in the United States as well as handling E-Learning for California under Governor Schwarzenegger. Steve also has an aerial photography company that utilizes model helicopters that he builds himself.
Pablo’s newest member Larry Antonino, bassist and vocalist, is a busy musician, who aside from playing with Pablo Cruise, has played with Air Supply, Barry Manilow, Ronnie Laws, Jeff Beck, Al Jarreu and more.
