Sussex firefighter wins rib-eating contest

  • Sussex Fire Department firefighter T.J. Donnelly stepped up to the plate at the fourth annual Rock, Ribs and Ridges Rib Eating Contest to defeat favorite and three-time winner Hunter Space of the Beemerville Fire Department.

Three-time rib-eating champion Hunter Space was dethroned on Saturday, June 14 when Sussex Fire Dept. firefighter T.J. Donnelly ate his entire rack of ribs in 3:33.

For his efforts Donnelly brought home a check for $500 to support the efforts of his volunteer department. As a prelude to the concert to be held at the county fairgrounds, Franklin Sussex Auto Mall offered fire departments from 10 attending towns a chance to win the prize.

The ribs were supplied by renowned rib master Eric Figueroa of the Double S Diner. Music was provided by the Farmer Phil Band.
