  • U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service employee Fran Stephenson is shown headed down to the far end of the lake to bring back some veterans for their lunch break.

  • Maria Jones of West Milford is about to begin cutting the cake donated by Wakefern Food, the owner of several area Shop Rite stores.

  • Ted Flaxman of Wantage enjoyed a day of fishing at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge. Mr. Flaxman served in the Special Forces from 1965 to 1968. He was assisted by Double V member Pat Basso (left) also of Wantage.

Vernon’s Double V Rod and Gun Club brought 36 disabled American military veterans, for a free day of fishing at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday.

Some 34 club members and seven additional boy scouts and volunteers helped make the day a success that included a fine lunch and celebratory cake donated by Wakefern Food, the owner of several area Shop Rite stores.

This section of the refuge is now open to all and features a brand new handicapped accessible fishing dock with ramps.
