The 2014 John Danko Memorial Wallkill Valley Ranger Rumble took place on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Several North Jersey youth football teams participated in scrimmages at the Hardyston Township Sports & Recreation Complex.

The Wallkill Valley Rangers, Watchung Hills Warriors, West Milford Highlanders, High Point Hawks, Long Valley Raiders, Lenape Valley Patriots, Vernon Vikings and North Warren Patriots kept football fans entertained for several hours.

The day of scrimmages was in honor of the late John E. Danko who resided in Hamburg for 43 years. Danko was a much-admired Sussex County educator and sports coach for 34 years before retiring in 1992. He taught at Wayne Valley High School (Passaic County), Franklin High School and Wallkill Valley Regional High School. Danko served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Danko recieved his formal education at Bloomsburg State Teachers Colleg (now Bloomsburg University). Danko made quite an impact on people he met. He was well liked and respected. Danko passed away in 2008 at age 74. Danko's family and area community want to keep his legacy alive in youth sports.
