VERNON — Ceramic artist Agatha Wyman from Highland Lakes and photography artists from The New Jersey Photography Forum are exhibiting “Contemporary Abstracts” at The New Providence Library gallery from Oct. 20 through Dec. 4, 2014.

The public is invited to view the artworks during regular library hours: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The library is located at 377 Elkwood Avenue in New Providence.

Wyman is showing her Stone Balloon series; ceramic “balloons” that she shapes, bends and twists to mimic the foibles of man. The “balloons” shapes are wheel-thrown, then altered and combined with hand-built elements.

“Balloons are symbols of holiday happiness and childhood joys, but here, with a touch of humor, they struggle against the inevitable, and we chuckle at their antics and their fates.” Wyman said.

The “Contemporary Abstracts” artists were selected by Nancy Ori, director of the New Jersey Photography Forum. Ori’s abstract canvases and Wyman’s ceramic pieces are exhibited in the front room. The photography artists showing in the meeting room are: Michael Endy from Westfield, Thomas G. Hart from Bayonne, Charlann Meluso from Berkeley Heights; and Heidi Sussman from West Orange. Ori, owner of New Jersey Media Center in Berkeley Heights, has been a professional photographer for more than 35 years covering events and portraits. During that time she also established herself as one of the premier instructors and fine art exhibitors in the state.

“Often, having too many elements or details in a work of art creates confusion and diffuses the communication," said Ori, the curator. "It is through the process of elimination, emphasis and abstraction that we can get to the essence of something. All the works in this exhibit were chosen to allow us to move into the world of abstraction while exploring symbolism, design, light and color."
