The Vernon Township Historical Society was awarded a $13,000 grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission for interpretive signage at the 10,000-year-old black Creek Site on Maple Grange Road.

The society applied for the grant for the purpose of designing interpretive signage to explain the history of the Black Creek Site, which is on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.

Several years ago, the Society had won a $25,000 grant from the State of New Jersey for an Interpretive Plan for the Black Creek Site, which was successfully written by Darcy Hartman of “History In the Making.” Among many other historic documents, Hartman also developed and implemented a comprehensive education program for Ellis Island. She also wrote an integrated interpretive plan for the 150-mile Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. She will work with the Vernon Historical Society to help produce a management plan for the Western Highlands Scenic Byway, the eighth such Scenic Byway in New Jersey.

The society meets on the third Friday of every month at the Senior Citizens Center in Vernon at 21 Church Street at 7 p.m. Membership is open to anyone. For information about the society, call 973-764-6545.
