VERNON — The GFWC Vernon Township Woman’s Club recently sponsored Vernon students Ava Blanchard and Caitlin McDonald to attend the 69th Annual Girls Career Institute.

Hosted by the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs, GCI affords high school juniors the unique opportunity to engage in a college experience while learning about various career options from women who have gained success and prominence in their chosen fields.

The Woman’s Club generally sponsors one student for GCI, however, due to the number of qualified candidates this year, the club voted to send two women to attend this outstanding program. Participants are selected on the basis of interest, community service and participation in school activities.

Blanchard and McDonald joined 175 girls from throughout the state at Douglass Residential Campus at Rutgers University in New Brunswick for four days in June. They experienced a taste of college life by living in a dorm, eating in the cafeteria, and attending lectures and workshops where they learned about the diversity of career choices available to them. They also networked with other GCI participants, worked on craft projects, presented skits and enjoyed group activities. Girls who attend GCI often develop life-long friendships with other participants.

The Vernon Township Woman’s Club meets monthly from September through June at the Vernon Senior Citizens Center. The Club is a member of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs which was founded in 1894 and is headquartered on the Douglass Campus.
