Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge is partnering with the National Wild Turkey Federation to offer a unique deer hunting opportunity for people with permanent disabilities.

The Disabled Sportsmen Deer Hunts are aimed to provide individuals with a quality hunting experience under the guidance of an experienced mentor. The hunts will take place Nov. 3, 4, and 5 during New Jersey's Permit Bow Season. Crossbows will be provided if needed but participants are welcomed to use their own archery equipment. A limited number of off-road, electric tracked wheelchairs will also be available upon request.

Each hunt day begins with a meet and greet with mentors and a chance for shooting practice. Lunch will be provided for all participants. Following lunch, hunters and their mentors will set up in prepared ground blinds for an afternoon hunt. Free deer processing is being offered by Newton High School's Future Farmers of America Chapter following the hunts on Friday, Nov. 6.

The hunting location is a 167-acre parcel of field and forest habitat, reserved for special hunt programs only. Hunting is prohibited at all other times. The area is owned and managed by Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge in Sussex.

To register for this opportunity, contact Fran Stephenson Park Ranger, at 973-879-5298 by Oct. 16. Participation is limited to 4 hunters per day and is first-come, first-served. A $50 refundable deposit is required at registration. Registered applicants must obtain a valid N.J. Bow and Arrow or All-around Sportsmen License, Zone 2 Bow Permit, and an Antlered Buck Permit prior to the hunt.
