| 18 Jan 2016 | 03:02

Vernon Township High School will host its first “Hidden in Plain Sight” on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m.

The snow date is Feb. 16.
The event is presented by the Vernon Coalition, a program of the Center for Prevention and Counseling, in partnership with the Vernon Township Police Department, the Vernon PAL and the Vernon Municipal Alliance. This educational exhibit, to prevent youth drug use, is suitable for parents, other community members and any adult who works with or cares about young people. A replica of a teenager’s bedroom will be on display for participants to browse and observe, becoming familiar with where and how teens might hide drugs or paraphernalia. Seemingly innocent items commonly used by youth could actually indicate a substance abuse problem. This awareness event will allow adults to be more proactive in helping a young person who might be using drugs. Hear from local prevention specialists, law enforcement and lawyers about current drug trends and how to prevent youth substance use disorders.

A panel of dedicated professionals have committed to add their expertise during the evening including Vernon Township Police Department Chief Randy Mills, Vernon Municipal Prosecutor, Alicia S. Ferrante, Sussex County Prosecutor, Francis Koch and Vernon Township School District Superintendent, Art Di Benedetto.

Complimentary child care will be available courtesy of the Vernon PAL Youth Leadership Council. In addition, free pizza will be served at 6:30 p.m., prior to the event. RSVP at vtsd.com/coalition or contact Gemma Chalkley, Vernon Coalition Youth Coordinator at Gemma@centerforprevention.org to allow for planning.
