Sussex-Wantage school board changings meeting format

The Sussex-Wantage School Board changed to a committee format structure on Jan. 20.

During the meeting, President Robert Heiden brought up the idea of moving from a full board format to the committee structure. He said in light of board members having different strengths, such as education and finance, he thought the format would best serve the district.

The committee structure divides the board into committees, which meet individually and report back to the full board recommending action.

In response, the board voted 6 in favor, with 3 abstentions. School Board members Ryan Coyle, Kenneth Nuss, Vice President William Bolella, Susan Langan, Amber Simons, and Heiden voted yes. School Board members Susan Fields, Walter Krynicky and Steven VanNieuwland abstained.

Coyle requested the Policy Committee require any board resolution requiring action be posted three days in advance for the benefit of the public. Board attorney Yaacov Brisman said it is often not possible and wanted the board to be careful in its district requirements.

Superintendent Jeanne Apryasz said that sometimes with personnel issues it may be less than three days before action.

Nuss asked if there was a deadline for submissions. Apryasz said yes. He next asked if there are repeat offenders, to which she said no.

Coyle added language could be included to help take care of exceptions.

Public comment
During a discussion between Sharon Vehida and Brisman, Brisman said a couple of meetings ago, he had attempted to respond to the questions regarding the purchase of the electric sign within the law.

"Right, I asked you to give that policy where the public is not allowed to know the disciplinary actions taken," Sharon Vehida said.

“Ma’am,” Brisman interrupted and informed, “The Board of Education and president are my client.” He continued he does not give out legal advice to people. He does give out the information which he is permitted legally to do.
