The Vernon Township Council passed legislation limiting employment for elected members of the township's governing body for a year after they leave their positions.

The measure passed, 3-2, with Councilmen Dick Wetzel and Patrick Rizzuto voted against it.

The ordinance which met with criticism, was put forth by Councilwoman Jean Murphy and Council President Dan Kadish, has been called unnecessary. Critics say it deprives the township of talent and has been called personal spite directed at former Mayor Victor Marotta. The ordinance applies only to the mayor and township council after they leave office.

The ordinance has been based on similar legislation by other municipalities, in particular, Andover Township, in what has been described as achieving transparency in government. It has been put forth as a means of maintaining ethical behavior within local government.

“I think this ordinance is completely unnecessary,” stated Councilman Dick Wetzel, “I vote no.”

The legislation is retroactive and would apply to current and former elected or appointed members of the governing body.
