Seeking more tutors

| 02 Feb 2016 | 05:17

More people than you might think encounter difficulties in their lives because they lack facility in the use of English. In Sussex County, more than 8 percent of adults do not speak English at home. Even among Sussex adults born in the U.S., more than 8,000 did not finish high school. Beyond the obstacles this presents to the individual are the difficulties created for everyone in the community whom they contact.

To help both individuals and the community, free tutoring in English and related skills is provided in Sussex and northern Warren Counties by Literacy New Jersey Sussex Programs. The volunteer tutors work one-on-one with each student, on a confidential basis, customizing the tutoring to the student's goals and level of English. The tutors find this work is truly rewarding.

We have a waiting list of students, so we need additional tutors, and are offering training for new tutors. You do not need to know a foreign language. The training will be offered at the Sussex-Wantage Library, on Tuesdays, 10 a.m. -1 p.m., weekly from March 1 through April 12.

The first session, on March 1, is an orientation to the tutoring experience. This helps in deciding whether to become a tutor.

For more information, or to sign up for the training, call 973-300-9444 or email sboland@LiteracyNJ.org.
