Last Wednesday, Walnut Ridge School Counselor Nicole Keane thought she was attending a Read Across America assembly, but instead she was surprised to discover that she had won the Counselor of the County award from the Sussex County School Counselor’s Association.

Mrs. Keane won the award with the recommendations of school principal Rosemary Gebhardt and numerous schoolteachers, who noted her six years on the job and her unofficial title of “Chief Happiness Officer.”

As preschool students held up cards that spelled out that she’d won the award she was overwhelmed by the ceremonies along with the presence of her husband Brian and gifts of flowers and balloons.

Near the end of the program the room was showered with confetti.
