Sussex County Community College prides itself on being a military-friendly college.
The college works closely with veterans on a number of levels, assuring that they get the attention they need. In some cases, veterans need some extra assistance.
And so, the SCCC Skylanders baseball team is hosting a special Military Appreciation Game on Wednesday, April 20, at Skylands Stadium in Augusta, starting at 7 p.m. The Skylanders will face the Colts of SUNY Orange.
This event will be a fundraiser for the college’s Student Veterans Emergency Relief program (SVER). SVER provides emergency funds to student veterans at SCCC who need financial help in between semesters. Veterans receive a VA housing allowance of $2,500 per month, but only when college is in session. SVER aids veterans with additional assistance for those veterans who qualify and are in need of housing, car payments, food, and other essentials when college is not in session.
“No other college in New Jersey offers anything like this,” said Mike DeVilliers, Veterans Services Coordinator at SCCC. “If we can step in and intervene so they can continue their education without interruption that’s great. Our goal is to get them to the finish line. If we can give them an emergency stipend during a gap in their lives it’s the least we can do.”
DeVilliers himself is a veteran, having served in the Army for 10 years in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay, and elsewhere.
SVER is a program of the SCCC Foundation. For more information about the game or veterans’ services at SCCC, contact Mike DeVilliers at 973-300-2109.
