The Hilltop Country Day School Student Council recently attained national recognition after receiving the esteemed 2016 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils.
Hilltop’s Student Council attained this gold level award after consistently demonstrating the highest levels of leadership and providing services and activities that improved Hilltop and its community.
“The Student Council has won the award for eight consecutive years,” said Michael Umstead, the Upper School science teacher and Student Council adviser at Hilltop. “Only one other middle school in New Jersey earned this award and only four high schools in the state.”
Aside from sponsoring a variety of social and school spirit activities, the Hilltop Student Council has raised money for a variety of charities as well as improvements for the school. This year, they sent more than $2,000 to The Seeing Eye, raised more than $1,000 for the BARKS animal shelter, collected more than 2,000 lbs. of food for the Sparta food pantry and collected more than 300 toys for Project Self Sufficiency.
“We could not be more proud of our student leaders,” said Head of School Peter Gordon. “Our Student Council program fosters responsibility, creativity, problem solving, collaboration and above all, leadership in our graduates.”
The following students are involved in the Student Council: Karina Frangella ’16, of Sparta, Abigail Morris ’16, of Andover, Jessica Wilm ’17, of Newton, Justin Cooper ’16, of Ogdensburg, Ilyssa Gibson ’18, of Columbia, Nicholas Arapkiles ’19, of Andover, and Richard Cort ’18, of Belvidere.
