The first Crystal Springs Golf Resort qualifier for the Crystal Cup Championship held at the end of the golf season was held on Wednesday, April 20, at the Black Bear Golf Club. General Manager Dan Hintzen and Event Coordinator Eric Wefer hosted a packed lineup of male and female golfers seeking to gain Crystal Cup points and top honors in four competition divisions: men’s, women’s, seniors and couples.
Play kicked off with a 2 p.m. shotgun start on one of the most beautiful days of the spring under blue skies with the temperature in the 70s. The format of the day’s event was a two player team scramble in which each golfer hits a shot and the team plays the best of the two shots through the completion of each of the 18 golf holes.
Both a gross score and net score with GHIN handicap were recorded for each team. The teams with the lowest gross and net scores at the completion of play took home the honors. Golfers also competed in closest to the pin and long drive skill events.
The day’s top performing team of Anthony Fioretti and Randy Halat carded the best score of the day with a 6 under par 66 to capture the Men’s low gross title.
The low net winners in the men’s division were David Adelman and Tim Okrongly with a 9-under-par 63, Ed Lemire and Robert Monroe scored a 9-under-par 63 to win the Senior Division, Barbara Hurt and Barbara Newhouse were the winners of the Women’s Division with a 5-under-par 67 and Donna and Robert Wallerius won the Couples Division with a 5-under-par 67.
The closest to the pin winners included James Conrad who was 3’9” from the pin on hole #5, Janis Defrancesco who was 12’11” from the pin on hole No. 11 to win the women’s competition, and Anthony Fioretti whose tee shot landed 2’8” from the cup on hole No. 14. Longest drive winners included Tony Marinaro who was the men’s winner Carol Julich who hit the longest drive for the ladies and Pete DeGraaf was the long drive winner for the senior division.
