Students from Sussex County Technical School in Sparta placed third in a High School Investment Competition sponsored by Ithaca College’s School of Business.
Jesse Brailey and Scott Caratozollo won a $2,000 prize, which will be split between them and the school.
Sussex County Technical School teacher William Anderson served as the students’ advisor.
Early in the competition, the two students visited Ithaca College for a tour of the School of Business, live portfolio performance ranking and opportunity to meet with finance faculty members and students.
Now in its second year, the Investment Competition helps high school students in the northeastern U.S. learn basic principles in the stock market, various sectors, and fundamentals of real-time trading. One hundred and twenty-two teams from across five states participated in this year’s competition.
In early November, teams composed of 3-6 student members ranging from 10th to 12th grades received $500,000 in virtual US dollars to build a portfolio. The portfolios were scored each week, and teams were given an opportunity to reallocate their funds at four check points during the competition. The competition finished on March 18.
“We are very pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Ithaca College High School Investment Competition,” said Jason Muenzen, director of the Ithaca College Investment Program and instructor of Finance and International Business. “It has been terrific to watch these teams compete and enhance their knowledge about investing in the capital markets.”
The Ithaca College School of Business offers bachelor of science degrees in accounting and business administration (with concentrations in corporate accounting, finance, international business, management and marketing), and a bachelor of arts degree in legal studies. At the graduate level, it offers M.B.A. degrees in business administration and professional accountancy.
Bloomberg BusinessWeek recently named the School of Business to its list of the top 100 business schools in the country.
