The Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge is inviting the public to enjoy the trails as the woodlands come alive this spring.
On Saturday, May 7 "A Walk in the Woods" will take place along the Dagmar Dale Trail starting at 1 p.m. from refuge headquarters, 1547 County Road 565, Sussex. Timed when the trees are leafing out, the walk will be scenic and informative. Guides Frank and Marilyn Hennion have degrees in forestry and natural history and will offer their insights to the trees and forest habitat. They will discuss tree characteristics and identification, changes in New Jersey's woods, how the trees interact with the environment and impact our lives.
On Wednesday, May 11, the public is invited for a "Warbler Walk" along the Winding Waters Trail. The group will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the trail parking lot on Oil City Road, Pine Island, N.Y. Spring migration is bringing numerous birds through the refuge and creates an opportunity to hear and see many of the colorful songbirds. Guides from the Sussex County Bird Club will lead the walk, which is designed especially for beginners. People can bring binoculars or borrow a pair from the refuge.
