Learn how to handle a psychiatric crisis

A person in a mental health crisis is often unable to recognize that they are in need of medical treatment.
The person may need the intervention of caring family members who know where to turn for help. On Thursday evening, May 5, at 7:00 p.m., Saint Clare's Intensive Family Support Services and NAMI Sussex will team up to present a free 90-minute workshop on "What to expect when visiting the E.R. with your loved one who is in crisis."
This workshop for caregivers of adults with mental illness will prepare them for managing a loved one's psychiatric crisis. Participants will learn the protocols of a psychiatric evaluation at the hospital Emergency Room, including transportation, triage and medical clearance, and inpatient or outpatient referrals.
The presenters will be Carrie Parmelee and Tammy DiLoreto of Saint Clare's Intensive Family Support Services of Sussex County. Co-sponsoring the program will be the Sussex County affiliate of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Both organizations provide ongoing support and education for family members at no charge.
The workshop will be held at Bridgeway, 93 Stickles Pond Rd., Newton, N.J. There is no need to register in advance. For information or directions, call 973-214-0632.
