Peters Valley will host a new exhibition, Making Matters: Fresh Perspectives in Fine Craft, in the Sally D. Francisco Gallery from May 28 through Aug. 14 with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, May 28.
Each year Peters Valley School of Craft invites over 150 artists to teach workshops in each of its 8 studios: Blacksmithing, Ceramics, Fibers (Surface Design & Weaving), Fine Metals (& Jewelry), Photography, Woodworking (& Woodturning), and Special Topics (Mixed Media: Glass, Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, etc.). These nationally and internationally recognized artists come to Peters Valley from nearby, around the country and worldwide.
Peters Valley hosts master, mid-clear and emerging Artists-in-Residence, along with the visiting instructors. For the workshop season Artist Fellows in blacksmithing, fibers, fine metals, photography, woodworking, and specials topics join the Ceramics Department Head to manage the studios. Each studio also had a Studio Assistant.
Making Matters will prove an inspiring show featuring a wide range of styles, techniques, and materials for each craft media. Originally from Wyoming, metalsmith Nash Quinn has been inspired by his time in the bucolic setting of Peters Valley. Nash was an Artist Fellow at Peters Valley last summer, and it returning this summer both in the same role and also as a Workshop Instructor. For his series “Skull Ring Trio (Bird, Fish, and Reptile)”, Nash used the ancient technique of chasing and repoussé to form flat sheet metal in low relief. His design style and use of additional materials like the die-cut and powder-coated trim and oxidized sterling silver frame give a contemporary edge to these wearable objects.
The Gallery at Peters Valley School of Craft is located at 19 Kuhn Rd., Layton, and is open daily from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
