'Art-imals' art show at Skylands Gallery & Studio

| 28 Jun 2016 | 01:31

The opening for the Skylands Gallery & Studio new art show was held last Sunday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Beside the high quality fine art and artisan artworks that the gallery is known for, the opening featured complimentary food and beverages, live music by local artists Meg Riley and Angelo Amati, a pet adoption, and a new director. Phylis Barfoot of Vernon became the new director in May. Barfoot is a painter and mixed media artist who has been an active member of the Skylands Gallery and other art venues for a number of years. She replaces John Maione Jr. who is the founder of the gallery and will continue to be an active member. \
The exhibit is titled “Art-imals,” and some of the artwork depicts animals that are available for adoption. After each opening reception, 10 percent of the proceeds from all sales of the day are donated to a local charity. This time, the recipient was O.S.C.A.R., One Step Closer Animal Rescue. Currently, based in Sparta and housing animals for adoption in foster homes, the organization recently purchased a large facility in Andover, which it is repairing and plans to open as a “no-kill” shelter by the end July. Additional information can be found on their website www.oscaranimalrescue.org.
The “Art-imals” show will run until July 17. The next show is “A Thing of Beauty” and the opening will be Friday, July 29, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Although the Skylands Gallery & Studio is an artist cooperative, this show is an open call.
More information can be found under the “NEW! Call for Entries” tab on the gallery’s website.
