HARDYSTON — Most golfers are used to playing in competitions that feature simple formats that make it easy for the competitors to keep track of their scores. Not so with the 4th Crystal Cup held at The Crystal Springs Golf Resort’s Wild Turkey Golf Course on Wednesday, July 13. The format for this event was a two-player team competition in which each team combined the low gross score of one player with the net score of the second player to come up with a team total for each hole. Following the completion of play the scores of all teams were calculated to identify the team with the lowest gross plus net total score. Confused? Don’t feel alone. Some of the competitors in the event needed the help of the event staff to calculate their scores. However, at the end of play, all had another great time competing for top honors in the event and for points toward qualifying for the end-of-year Crystal Cup Championship.
Players give a “thumbs up” as they prepare to play in the novel team gross plus net 4th Crystal Cup Tournament.
At the end of play the competitors gathered at the Crystal Tavern Pavilion for a delicious buffet featuring a variety of meats, chicken, pasta, salads and desserts prepared by the outstanding Crystal Tavern staff. Awards were given to the top teams in the Men’s, Women’s, Senior’s and Couple’s Divisions. Additional prizes were awarded in the longest drive and closest to the pin skill competitions.
When the scorecards were finally tallied, the best gross plus net combined team score was a 3 under par 139 earned by the two-player team of Bret Trenkmann and Gene Komorowski.
The scorecard in the Women’s Division was submitted by the team of Kimberly Spiro and Patricia Zakur with a 19 over par 161 while the winning team in the Senior Division was Ed Lemire and Bob Mosier who carded a 4 over par 146. The winners of the Couple’s Division were the team of Sang Soo Lee and Alice Kwon with a 4 under par 138.
Hank Huelsebusch hit the best tee shot on hole No. 2 landing 4’8” from the pin to win the Men’s Closest to the Pin competition and Alice Kwon’s ball landed 5’6” from the hole on hole #2 to be the winner of the Women’s competition. Fred Staniewicz won the Senior’s Closest to the Pin competition with a tee shot that landed 5’4” from the pin. Men’s Long Drive honors went to Randy Halat with Barbara Hurt taking the prize for Women’s Long Drive and Ray Ketch captured long drive honors in the Senior’s Division.
While only a few can win golf tournaments, everyone who plays in these events comes away a winner having been able to enjoy a great day on a beautiful golf course with friends.
The next Crystal Springs Resort’s Crystal Cup Member Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the Crystal Springs Golf Course.
