Registrations are now being accepted for Hands-On History, the Vernon’s Township Historical Society’s very popular summer program for children entering grades two to four in September.
The program is from Aug. 15-18 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Space is limited and the society can accept up to 25 children per day. Parents are encouraged to register their children early. The cost of the program is $15 a day. This year’s program focuses on the Lenape Indians, New Jersey’s indigenous tribe and will culminate in a hands-on archaeology dig.
On day one, children will learn about the Lenape Indians and where and how they lived. Each day will consist of crafts, games, and traditional Indian foods and snacks. The children will make dream catchers, cornhusk dolls, and other crafts of Indian culture and tradition. On the second day they will learn about the cultural aspects of the Lenape Indians. On day three, they will have a visit from a Lenape Indian Chief and traditional Lenape Dancers and Drummers. The program will end on the fourth day with an archaeology dig with a professional archaeologist and a tour of the Black Creek Indian Site, Vernon’s prehistoric site that is on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. August 19 will be a rain date.
This is an entirely new program this year, as prior years focused on Colonial America. To register your child, go to the “Coming Events” page on the society’s webpage at vernonhistoricalsociety.com for an application and mail it in with a check or money order for the number of days your child will attend. An application can also be found at the Vernon Township Historical Society Facebook page. Mail the completed application to the Vernon Township Historical Society, P.O. Box 387, Vernon, NJ 07462.
