    June 23

    Kile Burke, 27, of Dingmans Ferry, Pa., was indicted on one count of sexual assault, a second-degree crime, one count of criminal sexual contact, a fourth-degree crime, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a third-degree crime.
    Sussex County Prosecutor Francis A. Koch announced that the Sussex County Grand Jury handed up an indictment to the Honorable William J. McGovern, III, J.S.C., at the courthouse in Newton on June 23, 2016.
    Arraignment before the Superior Court in Newton will be within the next 6 weeks.

    July 5

    Matthew L. Heyman, 24, pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree vehicular homicide.
    He was indicted on a charge of second-degree vehicular homicide.
    The case was investigated by Detective Keith Curry of the Vernon Township Police Department. The Grand Jury alleges that on Jan. 29, the defendant was driving while intoxicated and caused a head-on collision with another vehicle on Route 565 in Vernon causing the death of the other driver.
    The case was presented to the Grand Jury by Assistant Prosecutor Donald F. Cox, Jr. Arraignment before the Superior Court in Newton took place on July 5, 2016, and Heyman entered a plea of not guilty.
    Christopher Urban, 49, of Vernon pleaded guilty to third-degree conspiracy and third-degree theft.
    Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 26.
    In pleading guilty, the defendant admitted to conspiring and agreeing to participate and actually participating in the Oct. 18, 2015, staged a robbery of the Vernon Lukoil gas station.
    The case was investigated by Detective Keith Curry of the Vernon Township Police Department.

    July 8

    Kit Pettenger, 50, of Newton was sentenced to four years in New Jersey state prison. He was given credit for one day time served. Pittenger was ordered to pay restitution of $9,720.43 and fines and fees totaling $1,280.00. His driver license was ordered suspended for two years.
    He pleaded guilty on May 23, to burglary and to possession of a controlled dangerous substance (Heroin), both third-degree crimes.
    The defendant entered an individual’s Stillwater residence between Oct. 2, 2014, and Jan. 26, 2015, without the owner’s permission and removed copper piping. Upon his arrest, the defendant was found to be in possession of heroin.
    Katherine Salerno, 32, of Newton was sentenced to three years of probation. She was ordered to submit to a TASC evaluation and follow all recommendations from same, complete all previously imposed PTI conditions, and pay all fines and fees.
    She pleaded guilty on April 11 to possession of a controlled dangerous substance, a third-degree crime, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, a fourth-degree crime.
    On Sept. 26, 2015, she was stopped for a motor vehicle offense and found to be in possession of heroin and Lyrica.

    July 11

    Nora Lake, 56, of Hamburg pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled dangerous substance, a third-degree crime.
    Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 26.
    In pleading guilty, the defendant admitted to unlawfully possessing Xanax on Feb. 16 in Hardyston Township.
    The case was investigated by Detectives Masters and White of the Hardyston Township Police Department.

    July 18

    Samuel G. Caruthers, 46, of Mountain Lakes pleaded not guilty to a an indictment on charges of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, two counts of third-degree aggravated assault, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
    The case was investigated by Patrolman Ronald Koumaras of the Vernon Township Police Department. It is alleged that on Feb. 14, the defendant repeatedly punched a child victim in the face and poked him in the chest with the pointed end of a ski pole.
