Suicide prevention training coming

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will sponsor a free, interactive suicide prevention training called "safeTALK” on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The training, co-hosted by Family Partners of Morris & Sussex Counties, NAMI Sussex, and Saint Clare’s Intensive Family Support Services, will take place at the Family Partners Community Center, 67 Spring Street, Newton, NJ and will be presented by Yania Padilla Sierra, a registered safeTALK trainer.
The safeTALK training program, which was developed by LivingWorks, is intended for individuals 15 and over who want to know what to say and do when someone they know seems to be contemplating suicide. It is designed to teach participants to recognize and engage persons who might be having thoughts of suicide and connect them with community suicide intervention resources. This training program stresses safety while challenging taboos that inhibit open talk about suicide. The "safe" of safeTALK stands for "suicide alertness for everyone." The "TALK" letters represent actions that can be practiced to help those with thoughts of suicide: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe. Those who might benefit from this training include parents and other family members, school personnel, high school and college students, clergy, youth leaders, resident assistants, coaches, and any others who interact with people at risk of suicide and/or survivors of suicide attempts.
The training will be limited to 30 participants, each of whom will receive a safeTALK resource book, a printed wallet card, access to a smartphone app of the TALK steps, stickers identifying the participant’s willingness and ability to help, and a certificate. Brunch will be provided between 10:30am and 11:00am followed by the training. The workshop is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required.
