Vernon schools consider uniform policy

After a survey showed that over 400 families would potentially take part, the Vernon Township School District is drafting a voluntary uniform policy.
This policy, which will be presented to the board at next month's meeting, will allow parents to choose how their child dresses for school every day.
According to Interim Superintendent Art DiBenedetto, the plan is to approve the policy and the uniforms before the end of this calendar year, and then bring it into force beginning September 2017.
He will also be presenting uniform options at the next meeting as well, and said that the most financially reasonable uniforms were from Kohl's
Over the past year, various parents have come before the board to express approval of the idea, saying that it would save them money, make getting ready for school in the morning easier and help reduce peer pressure. The flip side of the policy for some is the restriction of personal expression and the promotion of conformity.
Uniform policies have been been expanding across the country, with one in five US public schools requiring uniforms in 2014, while only 1 in 8 schools required them in 2003-2004.
