Tri-State Actors Theater will present a staged reading of "The Beauty Queen of Leenane" on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Irish Cottage Pub and Restaurant, Rt. 206, Franklin. Pre-show dinner reservations (dinner served 5-7 p.m.) can be made by calling the Irish Cottage at 973 827-2090.
In 1996, The Druid Theatre Company, Galway, Ireland, officially opened the Town Hall Theatre with the premiere of "The Beauty Queen of Leenane" by Martin McDonagh. This September, to mark the 20th anniversary of its opening, Druid will return with a new production of the award winning play. Having originally played the part of daughter Maureen in 1996, actress Marie Mullen will this time play the role of manipulative aging mother Mag.
Set in the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, "The Beauty Queen of Leenane" tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early forties, and Mag, her manipulative aging mother, whose interference in Maureen’s first and possibly final chance of a loving relationship sets in motion a train of events that leads inexorably towards the play’s terrifying denouement. Tri-State’s cast includes: Mary Ann Hay of NYC, plays Mag and played Maureen in Tri-State’s 2001 production; Dawn Fantasia of Franklin plays Maureen; Sam Kitchin of Lake Hopatcong plays Patto Dooley and Albert Weitz of Sussex plays Ray Dooley. Mary Ann Hay, Sam Kitchin and Director, Paul Meacham are members of Actors Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers. On Sept. 24, audiences will once again have the opportunity to experience this masterful play in New Jersey.
