On Friday evening shortly after 7 p.m., solemn ceremonies in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day were held at the Northwest New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial behind the historic Ludlum-Mabee House on Route 15 South.
About 20 veterans and their supporters gathered for the event, which was coordinated by Vietnam War veteran Frank Arminio of Stanhope and Chapter 327 of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Of the veterans who attended, at least one each served in World War II and the Korean War.
Nationally, observances of the day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools, veterans’ facilities, and war and veterans memorials. These ceremonies are traditionally observed each year on the third Friday in September.
