— George’s Wine & Spirits Gallery will host a presentation about the college admissions process by educational consultant Jessie Peck Martin on Thursday, September 22, at 7 p.m. Fall wines and light hors d’oeuvres will be served. Tickets are $20 per couple; proceeds benefit local non-profit agency Project Self-Sufficiency. Local sommeliers George and Frances Delgado recently opened a new store, featuring a tasting room and gourmet kitchen, adjacent to Route 206 North at 12 Morris Avenue in Branchville.
Martin helps families navigate the college admissions process through her educational consultant firm, CompassU, which she founded in 2014. A member of NJACAC and IECA, Martin attends conferences, visits dozens of campuses annually, and meets regularly with admissions officers, students, and parents. “If you are the parent of a middle or high school student, this talk is for you,” Martin said. “Discussion topics will include: ‘When should we start looking at colleges? How can I increase my chances for financial aid? What should I do if my student isn’t a great test taker?’”
Proceeds from the event will benefit Project Self-Sufficiency, a non-profit agency which serves individuals and families in the New Jersey counties of Sussex, Warren and Hunterdon.
“Education is a top priority for the individuals served by Project Self-Sufficiency,” said Deborah Berry-Toon, executive director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “Some of the many programs which emphasize higher education offered by Project Self-Sufficiency include the Campus to Campus initiative with Sussex County Community College, and the New Jersey Youth Corps which assists young adults as they pursue their high school diploma and seek to further their education. We are grateful to George and Frances Delgado, as well as to Jessie Peck Martin, for selecting Project Self-Sufficiency to be the beneficiary of this event.”
“Supporting Project Self-Sufficiency is important for our community, because Project Self-Sufficiency is an organization that offers real opportunity to women and men who may be struggling with their family life due to tough circumstances,” Frances Delgado said. “Project Self-Sufficiency is there for those who want to help themselves, but are in need of assistance in gaining improved life skills, education, job training, medical care, childcare, legal assistance, you name it. Organizations like Project Self-Sufficiency and the people who work and volunteer there, make our community a better place for all of us!”
Tickets to the college admissions talk and wine-tasting event are available at www.compass-u.com. Those who purchase tickets in advance will be entered into a drawing to win a gourmet wine basket. For more information, or to purchase tickets by phone, call 973-948-9950.
