This past week was a welcomed hiatus for teachers and students alike as both enjoyed the annual four-day weekend for teachers’ convention in Atlantic City, You would assume students would be sleeping in, going to the mall, hanging with friends or just enjoying the cool, brisk autumn weather.
Not Haley Beauparlant, the Vernon Township High School sophomore who was also elected Miss Ramapo Valley’s Outstanding Teen for 2017, had other plans on her agenda. Beauparlant’s platform and statement is youth volunteering, leading and empowering and she totally believes in the motto “Volunteer today to become a leader of tomorrow. Empower others. Share your strengths. Grow your community.”
Organized by Beauparlant and nine of her VTHS classmates, they put on The We are Thankful Fashion Show Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Vernon Senior Center. Commencing at 11, seniors made fall décor get well cards which will be distributed to sick children at a hospital in New Brunswick through the Children’s Miracle Network. Beauparlant and students also provided a raffle with autumn themed prizes. Donations from the raffle totaled $150 and will also be donated to the Children’s Miracle Network.
The We are Thankful Fashion Show kicked off at 1 p.m. with a mixture of sophomores and golden seniors hitting the runway. Several girl models wore the latest in fashionable tunic dresses complete with sleeve slits or just off the shoulder styles. Sophomore boys strutted the runway with casual everyday fall wear, specifically, comfortable sneakers, backwards baseball caps and hoodies perfect for the autumn chill.
Not to be outdone by the youth, senior models strutted holiday cheer fashions including a black velvet pants set and a mink coat perfect for Christmas shopping days. Two student couples modelled their choices for Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties which are becoming the holiday rage. Youngsters and the more mature both seemed to enjoy each other’s company.
With the fast- approaching holidays, Haley Beauparlant will continue her volunteerism and is also advancing to a state pageant competition in January.
