Vernon VFW holds solemn ceremony

About 40 veterans and their family members turned out for the solemn Veterans Day ceremony, held in front of Wallkill Valley VFW Memorial Post 8441 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Friday.
For those who came to the post, hot coffee, bagels, sausage patties, scrambled eggs, and potato patties were available for breakfast.
When asked about the ceremonies, former Post Commander Jim Davis of Highland Lakes responded, “Eleven, eleven, eleven.” Prior to Veterans Day, the holiday was originally called “Armistice Day.”
On that date in 1918, what had been referred to as the “war to end all wars” was brought to a conclusion due to a truce that effectively ended World War I. The truce, or armistice, was agreed to at 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
For those who would like to support Vernon’s VFW, the post will be holding a beefsteak dinner this Saturday, Nov. 19. For more information or to reserve seats, call 973-764-9380.
