Fifth- and sixth-grade students in Lounsberry Hollow Middle School have been on the move this fall promoting and participating in community service activities.
Approximately 40 students are involved in the Kiwanis based group, The K Kids. This group, run by Mrs. Susan Rebisz and Mrs. Barbara Monschauer, two teachers in the school, advocates helping in the community.
What do costumes, cans and scarecrows have in common?
The K Kids designed and created scarecrows which were put on display in the school’s cafeteria. Faculty, staff, and students were invited to vote for their favorite scarecrow by placing a non-perishable food item in a box labeled with the scarecrow's name. This year’s winning scarecrow was O.G. Mickey and a total of 235 items of food were donated to a local food pantry.
Students and staff alike were invited to dress up for Halloween due to the overwhelming response to the food drive. The halls were filled with walking hot dogs, larger than life animals, and various other interesting characters.
What’s next for the K Kids?
November will find the students bagging toiletries for the homeless and and December will become a month students will experience first hand having a direct impact on others as the K Kids will spend an afternoon reading to younger students in several of the elementary schools.
