Sussex County's Community Wellness Center, "A Way to Freedom," is a little known but highly valuable resource for adults living with mental illness.
The local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI Sussex, plans to shine a spotlight on the Wellness Center on Thursday, Dec. 1, from 7-8 p.m. The program will be held at Bridgeway, 93 Stickles Pond Rd., Newton. The public is welcome to attend free of charge.
Betty McTeague, Manager of A Way to Freedom, will speak about the Center and how much it means to her and to the other mental health consumers who regularly gather there for peer support, friendship, and discussion groups. A Q&A session will be held after the presentation.
"At A Way to Freedom we believe that mental health consumers are in many respects best qualified to help each other," says McTeague. "In addition to making new friends, you can learn new skills and discover your potential in a relaxed, non-judgmental and friendly atmosphere."
The Center, located at 29 Trinity Street in Newton, is open Mondays and Fridays from 2-6:30 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1-5 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. It is a free service provided by Collaborative Support Programs of New Jersey (CSPNJ). Local transport is available. To contact the Center, call 973-300-0830.
Following the presentation, NAMI Sussex will hold a short general business meeting.
