Walter E. Hughes

Walter E. Hughes of Port Jervis, N.Y., died at home on Monday, Dec. 19, 2016. He was 91.
Son of the late Walter and Myrtle (Martin) Hughes, he was born on Oct. 29, 1925, in Brooklyn. He was married to Mary R. Hughes, who predeceased him on Aug. 16, 2008.
He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran who served from 1944 to 1946. He was a Paratrooper Veteran of 504 P.I.R., 82D Airborne Division, and participated in “Bridge Too Far Operation” in Holland, Battle of the Bulge, France, Germany and PFC.
He was awarded with the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct ETO Medal, three Bronze Campaign Stars, Combat INF Badge, Parachute Wings with Combat Arrow, Presidential Unit Citation, Foreign Awards Medal, Dutch Order of William, Orange Lanyard, French Fourragere, Belgium Fourragere, Chevalier of the Legion of Honor (France).
He was a Charter and Life Member of 82D Airborne DIV Association, 504 Parachute Infantry Regiment Association, Life and Past Commander of Mt. Laurel VFW Post 8612 Milford, Pa., Life Member at Castle Point DAY Association, NRA Member, Life member of the C-47 Club, Member of West Point Officers Club, Founding Chair for Tri-State-Mid-Hudson Chapter, 82 Airborne Division Association in Port Jervis, member of Saint Mary’s Church, Port Jervis, and a retired Tug Boat Captain for Russell Brothers Towing in New York City, N.Y.
Survivors include two brothers, Elwood Selouer of Oceanside, Long Island, N.Y., and Walter Selouer of Newton, N.J.; nephew, James Ruggiero of Hawley, Pa.; nieces, Sharon Guadagno, Joyce Cox, Lynn Schettina, Donna Schettina, and Marion Acquavella; and close friend, Gert Conroy.
A viewing took place on Dec. 21 at the Stroyan Funeral Home, Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Dec. 22 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Port Jervis. The Rev. Matthew Newcomb officiated. Burial followed in the Milford Cemetery.
