Tutor training

| 21 Feb 2017 | 12:25

There are many people here in Sussex County who encounter difficulties in their lives because they have difficulty in using English — reading, writing, or speaking it. This includes newcomers from abroad (more than 8 percent of adults in the county do not speak English at home). It also includes adults born in the U.S.; more than 8,000 Sussex adults did not finish high school. Beyond the obstacles this presents for the individual, are the difficulties created for everyone in the community who interacts with them.
To help both these individuals and the community, the Sussex Branch of Literacy N.J. provides free tutoring of adults in English and related skills. The free tutoring provided by these volunteers is confidential. It is usually one-to-one, and always custom-fit to the specific needs of the student.
We have a waiting list of students who badly want to improve their use of English and related skills—and thus improve their lives. We need additional tutors for both Sussex and northern Warren Counties, and are now offering training for new tutors. One does not need a teaching background to do this, nor do you need to know a foreign language—our training will prepare you for this tutoring.
If you would like to learn more about the tutoring experience, come to our Orientation session, March 9th, at 10 AM at the Sussex-Wantage Library. This will be followed by five weekly training sessions, also at 10 AM at the Library. The orientation will help you decide whether you want to embark on this truly rewarding endeavor.
You need to register for the orientation and training. To register, call 973-300-9444 or email training@literacynj.org
