Rolling Hills third-grade student Monica Curry won the Vernon Township School District chef's challnege with her cauliflower crust pizza.
While healthy eating can be a challenge for kids and parents, elementary school students in the Vernon Township school district used their creativity and culinary skills to make healthy comfort food recipes in the 2017 "Sodexo Future Chefs" Challenge held on March 23, 2017, at the Rolling Hills School. The national initiative, now in its seventh year, was created to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while also encouraging them to be active and creative in the kitchen. Vernon district students joined over 2,600 other students representing more than 1,300 Sodexo-served school sites in 30 states nationally.
Forty-seven elementary school students submitted healthy comfort food recipes and the eight best were selected to participate in the district-wide finals event. Finalists prepared, with Sodexo staff assisting and presented their creations before three judges, Dr. Pauline Anderson. Glen Meadow School principal, Dr. Stew Stumper, Rolling Hills School principal. and Mr. Steve Kepnes, VTSD Business Administrator.
