Good things coming to Vernon volleyball team

Good things are happening for the Vernon High School boys' volleyball program this spring and that’s not surprising given the strong foundation that’s been built for the Vikings over the past several years.
Something that can be said with a great deal of certainty is that Vernon isn’t winning all of these matches because the play an easy schedule-actually it’s quite the opposite as they’ve toppled some considerably tough opponents on the court thus far this season.
It can also be stated that the Vikings aren’t consistently victorious because a physic somewhere projected wins with crystal ball.
The reason why Vernon is playing so well is because they have student-athletes on the roster who trust one another as well as a competent coaching staff.
Something else that Vernon has going is the noteworthy leadership of the team captains-Chris Ploch and Parker Shade, both of whom are seniors.
“Admittedly, any of my seniors could be captains this season," Vernon head coach Jeff DeYoung said. “They are all excellent student-athletes and leaders. Chris and Parker have played varsity volleyball for all four years, starters at that, which is uncommon for freshmen. They work tirelessly on the court and in the classroom. They are able to juggle all of their responsibilities and when they speak, everyone listens and respects what they have to say. It is easy to convey expectations through them and their input during matches is invaluable to me.
“They continue to increase both their volleyball IQ and ability to adapt to opponent’s tactics. Chris knows when the attack needs pace and when to adjust and hit the off-speed shot. Parker continues to improve upon his footwork and knowing in each rotation what his attacking options are and how to get those hitters the ball so we can score points."
Coach DeYoung expected both Ploch and Shade to be there to help motivate their teammates and he hasn’t been disappointed.
“They ran effective and informative captain’s practices in the offseason and are always willing to help out at practice with the newer players," DeYoung said.
“My additional seniors, Ethan Kolonoski and AJ Rodriguez, have also contributed to the success of the program. Both chose to play more club ball in the offseason, and as more has been asked of them, they have responded positively and enthusiastically."
In matches played through the month of April, the Vikings had an overall record of 10-2. On May 5, Vernon has a road challenge at Jefferson.
