Motorcycle tags bill goes to governor

TRENTON — Legislation approved by the Assembly yesterday and awaiting Gov. Chris Christie’s signature gives veteran bikers the option of purchasing special license plates for their motorcycles.
The bill is sponsored by Assemblymen Anthony Bucco and Parker Space, and Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce.
“Veterans are justifiably proud of their service,” said Bucco. “Thousands of veterans have cars with special tags denoting their military service, and many have expressed interest in special plates for their motorcycles. We are proud of our military men and women. They have well-earned this opportunity.”
Under the bill, the initial veteran plate fee will be $50. Annual renewals cost $10, and the fees support programs benefiting veterans.
“I often meet vets out on the road on my bike. You can hear the pride in their voices when you speak with them,” said Space. “Many of them ride as a group at bike rallies, charity runs, or welcome-home events for returning veterans. This special motorcycle spotlights their service while supporting other veterans.”
Pennsylvania and Maryland offer veteran motorcycle tags. There are 450,000 veterans in New Jersey.
“For veterans who love their country and love to travel New Jersey’s scenic back roads on two wheels, this is deserved recognition,” said DeCroce. “The best part is the fees will benefit other veterans who need help.”
