WANTAGE — Forty- six people, both young and not so young, registered for Saturday's Drum Circle at the Sussex Wantage Library and sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
As soon as they encountered the drum and beat it for the initial time, they were hooked. Smiling, laughing and grooving folks under the direction of David Karlberg, had a fun-`filled afternoon to remember. Studying with two leading facilitators Arthur Hull and Jim Donovan, Karlberg was a natural drummer and master of rhythms.
“There are no mistakes,” Karlberg reassured the crowd.
He made available percussion instruments of every type. Having types of drums from Native Americans, Africa and the Caribbean. Karlberg even demonstrated his superb drumming on a five- gallon water bottle. The rhythms animated some participants, especially the youngsters. Karlberg stressed that circle drumming can be therapeutic and almost hypnotic. He launched the program by explaining that drums have a low and high sound. The center of the drum produces a bass sound.
“Fingers should be together and bounce onto the drum,” he instructed. “It’s not how hard you drum, it’s the overall technique.” Once the 46 new drummers acclimated, they were able to respond and copy Karlberg’s rhythms as he guided them with a cow bell type instrument. Waves of rhythms streamed, constant pulses and patterns, happy folks on a Saturday afternoon with big smiles and tired hands.
