WANTAGE — According to answers.com, there are 83,000 horses in New Jersey, mostly pleasure horses used for riding, showing and pets. In the past, there were probably more horses living in Sussex County than people. Back then horses were a form of transportation and were used in the work force, pulling plows, hauling timber and transporting goods, to name a few. They were the literal definition of horse power.
All Things Equine, a day-long event on just that, took place at Lusscroft Farm in Wantage on Saturday July 22, sponsored by the Northwest Horse Show Association. An educational event, All Things Equine — Northwest Jersey Horse Show is committed to continuing interest in and support of the equine community and the community of Sussex County. Their activities at Lusscroft Farm help to support restoration of the historic farm.
The event kept visitors’ interest with all day pony and carriage rides and a silent auction. NJHSA Vice President Donna Schafetz and Recording Secretary Tara Christensen reviewed the day’s happenings and professional speakers. During the day, visitors were educated on equine massage therapy, corrective shoeing and nutrition. Program participants Kate Wilson spoke and demonstrated correct saddle fitting, Helping Horseshoe discussed Therapeutic Riding. Bruce Martin spoke and demonstrated reining and ranch riding. Animal psychic Barbara Goodfriend amazed the group with her observations. Veterinarian Dr. Judith Shoemaker had an informative talk on conformation and horse posture.
The day of equine learning and “horse sense” continued until 4 pm when the silent auction winners were announced.
