Tiger lillies non-invasive

I read Barbara Kellam-Scott's letter to the editor, and I have a few things to add. First of all, the plants pictured in the July 13th issue photo were not tiger lilies. If she wants them eradicated so badly, she better get the name right. Tiger lilies are native, Day Lilies are not. I worked for the New Jersey Botanical Gardens for 26 years and sat through many invasive species classes. My personal opinion is that they are here to stay; they beautify our roadsides, and hurt no one. Purple loosestrife, on the other hand, clogs waterways. She should worry about things like this. There are so many invasive plants in our area. What about Japanese Knotweed (polygonum), also known as New Jersey Bamboo? Just think about the orange day lilies you have seen along the roadside. Did they make you smile? Did you think that they were ruining our roads? Let's take on garlic weed. I fight yearly to keep this biennial from taking over my wooded property.
We have many non-native species that now live here and are here to stay. Let's worry about the problem ones.
