WANTAGE — The Sussex Wantage Library Branch held its second annual Cupcake Contest on Saturday September 9.
This year’s contest called for cupcake displays to reflect books or stories with contestants in the youth and adult categories being judged accordingly.
Competition was tight with fantastic cupcake creations representing Harry Potter books, Goosebumps, The Very, Hungry Caterpillar, Cinderella and more. According to contest organizer Allyson Hensley, the cupcake contest received 23 entries.
“The library had a cupcake competition last year and it received a splendid response as it did again this year. It mirrors cooking shows or the NJ State Fair. It’s good, friendly competition.”
Six meticulous judges observed, sampled product and scored the entries for roughly 40 minutes. Judges included Sussex Councilman and town historian Mario Poggi, two retired Home Economics teachers and state fair baking contest judges Shirley Smith and Peg Behnke, Dotty Valkema of the Holland-American bakery, John Abate of Wantage Animal Control and Lorraine Perry of the soon to open Lorraine’s Cake and Tea Shoppe.
First place ribbon adult winner was Heather Outer, with her cupcake rendition of Alice in Wonderland. First-place youth winner Elizabeth Lazzano divided her entry into three books she had read in school, Wonder, The Underdogs and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
A cupcake sampling session took place at the competition’s conclusion.
