Watch the hawks migrate

Several species of hawks, falcons, and other birds of prey are now migrating from the northeastern United States to the warmth of southern climes.
On Saturday Sept. 16, Peter Wulfhorst of the Gifford Pinchot Audubon Society will lead a field trip to Sunrise Mountain to observe migrating hawks.
September provides a chance to observe broad-winged hawks, ospreys, American kestrel, Merlin and sharp-shinned hawks along the Kittatinny Ridge, which runs northeast to southwest, on days with winds from the northwest provides lift for the hawks on their migration. In this way, the hawks conserve their energy for the long flight. Sunrise Mountain, in Sussex County, New Jersey is located along the Kittatinny Ridge.
Field trippers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at Key Food Marketplace, 501 West Harford St., Milford, to car pool to Sunrise Mountain. The group will stay on Sunrise Mountain for the morning and part of the afternoon, depending on how many birds are migrating.
The trip is free and open to the public. Bring a lunch.
