Treat Old Glory with respect

To the Editor:
With the NFL anthem controversy put in the spotlight by President Trump, I think it's a good time to call to attention the poor treatment of Old Glory that I've witnessed locally.
While walking my dog early every morning I see that many displays of our flag are kept out all night. The flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset unless it's illuminated. I've also seen the flag flown from front porches with the bottom touching the shrubs or a railing. The flag should never touch anything beneath it.
The flag should also not be flown in a manner that is damaged, tattered, or soiled. I've seen vehicles, even on the highway, with tattered flags that appear to be the victim of the whipping wind generated from being driven around all day.
The flag should also not be displayed in advertising, worn as or on clothing (aside from in patriotic service), or on sports uniforms.
Flag-fliers can easily find the full U.S. Flag Code online, including proper and respectful disposal when it's time.
