Scenic byway workshop set

VERNON — The Vernon public and surrounding communities are invited on Oct. 15 from 2-4 p.m. to a public workshop where state officials, planners, and other consultants will discuss corridor management plan for the Western Highlands Scenic Byway.
The Western Highlands Scenic Byway is located in Vernon and Hardyston Townships, Sussex County. Designated a state scenic byway in 2014, the 21.4-mile byway captures the region’s agricultural and rural industrial heritage, historic landmarks, recreational opportunities, natural resources, and conservation areas.
The byway is the result of diligent work by the Vernon Township Historical Society and community residents who recognized the importance of protecting the rural beauty and rich history of the area.
A Corridor Management Plan, a requirement of the New Jersey Scenic Byway Program, is now being prepared for the byway. The plan, scheduled for completion in 2018, is being prepared with funding from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. It will identify strategies for conserving and enhancing the corridor’s rural agricultural character, historic qualities, and natural resources, and for building an appreciation of these resources through education and interpretation. It will also provide a tourism marketing strategy to promote awareness of the byway’s special features. A Sign Location Plan will identify locations for directional signs along the route.
