VERNON — The Highland Lakes Senior Club celebrated Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 10, with a luncheon in the Lake Room of the lake community’s clubhouse.
It was a fitting location as the room also contained the Wall of Honor, a permanent photo tribute to loved ones who served in the armed forces. The Wall was dedicated during Memorial Day ceremonies in May, 2017.
After the luncheon, President Joyce Healy directed attendees to the Seckler Room where guest speakers Nancy and Mark Wolfe of the Lake Wallkill section of Vernon presented a Power Point presentation on Nancy’s volunteer deployment to Afghanistan for six months.
“I saw firsthand how the PX was lacking in hygiene, snack and necessary items that military personnel basically need. It drove me crazy that snack items in the PX were date expired,” explained Nancy.
Nancy, who the troops refer to as Grandma and Mark back at home, initiated Supplies for Soldiers, a New Jersey non-profit organization that equips our troops with necessities and extra comfort items when one is so far away from home.
Working seven days and up to 18 per day, Nancy called the mission to Afghanistan her passion and something she was honored to do. In her six months in Afghanistan, supplies were delivered to 1,450 soldiers. She also made it a point to help out at the USO.
The Wolfes presented their current project to their audience, Operation Stocking Stuffer. The holiday mode collection will bring hygiene, snacks, novelty, comfort items and holiday cards to our troops as well as home veterans this season.
Items needed for the stockings include flashlights, hand and feet warmers, snacks like M&Ms and Rice Krispy treats, gum and granola bars. A complete donation list can be viewed on the website www.suppliesforsoldiers.org.
Vernon’s Candy Apple Shop on Route 517 generously donated candy and chocolates for our troops. A local Vernon drop off site is Weichert Realty on Route 515 and donations need to be in by Nov.27 for holiday delivery.
