VERNON — A true day of pride and respect took place on Wednesday November 8th when students and staff at Cedar Mountain School welcomed veterans for a special program and well-deserved acknowledgement.
“This is a two-part ceremony today,” clarified Principal Rosemary Gebhardt.
A parade and procession of vets led by the Vernon Township High School Band circled the playground of the school as students joined their family member in the parade. Red, white and blue dressed students then honored and entertained the veterans during a program inside the gym. Each of the primary grades and their respective teachers presented patriotic songs like “America the Beautiful”, “This Land is My Land” and “Yankee Doodle.”
Other classes recited beautiful poems. One class presented the Pledge of Allegiance in sign language. A dance to “Yankee Doodle” was performed by two classes partnering up. Looks of sheer delight were on the faces of the students and the veterans alike.
Roughly 75 veterans representing World War II to those currently serving in the armed forces attended, several in uniform. Principal Gebhardt introduced a distinguished veteran who proudly wore his purple heart medal to the ceremony.
A good, old-fashioned patriotic picture coloring contest was sponsored by the Vernon VFW Post. Principal Gebhardt announced the three winners at the end of the program. First-place winner was Adam Jaros, second place was Hannah Potzer and third place went to Taylor Enright. Each received a gift card from Walmart.
Veterans enjoyed fresh baked goodies at the ceremony’s end.
