Farm bill in hands of governor

TRENTON — Assemblyman Parker Space’s legislation helping New Jersey farms be more competitive and profitable is in the hands of Gov. Christie.
The bill authorizes the establishment of food hubs — or food incubators — where farmers can collectively promote their sales, marketing, branding and profitability. It was approved by the Assembly this week.
“Many small and mid-size farms struggle to turn a profit. Large farms have a distinct advantage. Food hubs, however, can help New Jersey’s smaller farms reduce costs by sourcing materials more efficiently, and maximize revenue with superior marketing and branding,” said Space (R-Sussex). “They are also an answer to the growing consumer demand for locally grown, high value produce.”
The U.S. Agriculture Department has been at the forefront of developing food hubs across the nation.
