— Kingo Wong came here from Hong Kong, where his family is in the restaurant business, so it was a natural that he would open his own eatery.
He named it Wings Fusion Asian Bistro. "Wings," because in Chinese they symbolize perpetual luck and freedom and "Fusion Asian," because he serves Chinese, Japanese and Thai food.
"I call it fusion because we use different sauces," Wong said. "Here they are more natural, light and healthy without so much salt or sugar. I care about the quality."
To celebrate the anniversary, Wong is offering 20 percent off the entire menu, from now until March 31.
"Local customers are also friends and I want to show my appreciation," he said.
The restaurant offers dine in, take-out and catering, with an extensive menu.
Customers are friendsWong likes to make friends and treats his customers as family. Often customers bring in their own liquor and share a drink with Wong.
He also encourages their suggestions, which has resulted in new offerings like his hibachi for two.
He employs a Japanese chef for sushi that is so tasty and colorful that patrons sometimes take photos of it. He also employs a Thai and Chinese chef, so that food is expertly prepared.
The restaurant is known for its sushi and seafood, which is delivered daily.
Wong said the best part about the restaurant is enjoying the friendship of the people in Vernon.
"I remember the first year we were here we didn't know anyone. I felt like a stranger," he said.
But over time, his customers became his friends.
Manhattan transplantWong lived in Manhattan and he used to come to the area to golf and ski. He fell in love with the hills and fresh air, so he decided to open a Manhattan-quality restaurant in Vernon. The first week, he recalls, "Not even 10 people came to the restaurant."
They even had to close briefly after a week because a pipe burst. Wong said his employees were worried and told him he would have to put a lot of money into advertising.
Wong told them the most important thing was to offer quality.
"Even if one table comes in, they will tell their friends," he told them.
After the first four weeks, the place was packed every weekend.
"I made a lot of good friends who really support us," he said. They often invite him to sit down and talk and share a drink with him.
Yes, wings are servedWong said the name of the restaurant initially caused some confusion. When they opened, they didn't sell wings, but they kept getting requests for wings, so they started offering them, too.
